LCE 6th grade Electronic Book Review Form
1. Student Reviewer's Name: Erin M.
2. Date of review of book: June, 2007
3. Complete Book Title: The Angels Trilogy: Angels Watching Over Me, Lifted Up by Angels, and Until Angels Close My Eyes
4. Author of Book: Lurlene McDaniel
5. Year the book was published: 2002
6. Genre: sad realistic fiction
7. Student rating of the book (1 the highest, 5 the lowest): I give this book a ONE because she is one of my favorite authors and this is one of
her best books; I also like sad book which is what this is.
8. Main conflict in the book: The main conflict in the book is Leah has bone cancer that mysteriously goes away when she is touched by an angel,
and her roommate's brother, Ethan, an Amish boy loves her and she loves him, but Ethan does not want to bring shame to the family by leaving his
religion.
9. Setting of the book: (place and time) The setting of the story is in Knightstown, Indiana and the time is around the 1990's or 2000.
10. Main Characters and part they play in the book:
(1) The first main character in the book is Leah Lewis-Hall. Her part in the book is sort of bringing the angel, Gabrielle, to help her recover from her bone cancer. She is also the one that Ethan falls in love with.
(2) The second main character is Gabrielle, who is the angel that saves Leah from bone cancer and brings back Rebekah in her angel form to say goodbye to Leah.
(3) The third main character in this book is Ethan who loves Leah and helps her through all the times her mother is not there for her.
11. Are the characters believable and interesting? The characters are believable because they are not doing fantasy ideas such a magic, but
put in the idea of angels which I believe myself. They also have events happen to them that could happen to somebody else and their characteristics are based upon people she actually knows. They are interesting because they are always in a mood and do different things that would not have been believed to have done.
12. One excellent direct quotation from the book: (include who said it, page number, and use quotation marks!)
"What couldn't change was who and
what she was, who and what she had become through her adversity of cancer, her fathers desertion, Neil's death, Ethan's love. No one could see into the future, but all at once Leah new she had a future. A gift given to her by Gabriella, Neil, Ethan, her mother, and even her grandmother. She could have it, if only she would reach out and take it.
Yes, she hurt. Yes, her heart felt battered and bruised. But bruises
healed. Hearts mended."
And a second important quote is when Leah goes home after driving Ethan home and they have a conversation, " A lump of emotion clogged Leah's throat.
"You're home," she said.
"Would you like to come in?"
She shook her head. "Not this time."
"What will you do?"
"Drive back."
"The trip is long, you should rest first." He looked concerned.
"I can make it." She started to get back inside the car, but he caught her arm and crushed her against his chest. "Oh, my Leah. I miss you already."
"You'll get over it." She squeezed her eyes shut. Her heart hurt. He held her at arms length. "I will never forget you. And I will never love another as I have loved you."
"Your fling is over. You'll be baptized. You'll marry an Amish girl," she said with resignation.
"You were not part of my fling," he said fiercely. "You were part of my life. You will always be in my heart, Leah. Until angels close my eyes."
13. Good reasons to read the book: Good reasons to read the book is that is realistic and hard-hitting, the author is the best selling author of
Six Months to Live that sold more than a million copies just in the U.S.A, and it is an all around good book.
14. Any reasons not to read the book? If you don't like sad or romantic books, I would not read this book, but is has just the right amount of both. If your parents are strict about ideas like kissing, you should not read it because a lot of the plot is Ethan not being able to marry her because he does not want to leave his religion and disappoint his family.
15. Did you like this book or not? And why… I loved this book so much. It has just the right amount of romance and sadness. I love sad books and I love romantic books, so that's why I love this author and this book because she balances them perfectly. I definitely shed a few tears over this one, well, maybe a lot, but sometimes I think that's good and it unclogs emotions you didn't even know were inside of you. This author is fantastic and I've already read this book about four or five times. This was a great book, that's why I chose it for my book report, so people can read it and enjoy it as well!
