8. Main conflict in the book: In the book the football players are playing against one of the toughest teams in Florida. The other team plays a prank on them hanging a stuffed animal on a tree in Claymore Middle School where everyone is shocked! Many of Claymore’s players and cheerleaders are deciding to play a prank on them. What is going to happen next?
9. Setting of the book: (place and time) The setting is in Florida! All the main characters go to the Claymore Middle School.
10. Main Characters and part they play in the book:
(1) Emily: Emily lives in a hotel her father owns and she can sleep wherever she wants in the whole hotel. She has a brother, and two sisters. Her brother is a football player as is her father. Her mom was a cheerleader and now the oldest daughter, Lynn, is a cheerleader. Emily, who is also a cheerleader now, does not think she is a cheerleader because she is good at cheerleading. She feels she is only on the team because her family was on the same team, and her bulldog, Bubba, is the mascot for the team.
(2) Melody: Melody is the new student and just came from Miami, Florida. She makes friends with many people because she is kind. Many people think of her as beautiful and nice. She makes the squad with Joan and Emily. Melody is great at cheerleading and she loves it so much. Melody likes Darryl, the captain of the ninth grade football team. All the main characters think he likes her too except for Sally.
(3) Joan: Joan is also the new too at Claymore. She has an older brother named Adam who is treated fairly by their parents. Joan always has to be home earlier than her brother and cannot have sleepovers with her friends. Joan makes the squad with Melody and Emily. Her parents don’t like Joan cheerleading because they think she could get hurt or could affect her grades and her piano lessons.
(4) Alexis: Alexis is best friends with Emily. Alexis loves basketball but because Emily is doing cheerleading Alexis wants to as well. They try out for the team together but Alexis does not make the squad. She feels she is not going to be part of Emily’s life because Emily will be cheerleading. Later Alexis and Jake, a childhood friend, become reporters for the school newspaper covering sports and writing an advice column.
(5) Sally: Sally is in ninth grade and co-captain of the cheerleading squad. Everyone thinks of her as the most beautiful and loving girl in school. Melody does too! Sally hates Melody! She hates her because she is jealous of Melody and Darryl’s friendship and feels Darryl will not be her girlfriend anymore.
(6) Darryl: Darryl is the captain of the ninth grade football team and everyone admires him. Sally and he are dating but he likes Melody too. He hangs out not only with the ninth and up but the group of seventh that are always together.
11. Are the characters believable and interesting? Yes, the characters are believable because I can relate to their feelings and experiences in school and family, and between friends. I recognize some of my own feelings about school and friends. Watching them solve their own problems gives me ideas on how to solve my own.
12. One excellent direct quotation from the book: (include who said it, page number, and use quotation marks!) “That was when I was in Elementary School,” Joan said, “I have more homework in middle school!”
Page 34 and Joan said it.
13. Good reasons to read the book: I liked this book because it showed how the people in the story’s feeling were like. It showed responsibility, friendship matters, and a whole lot of cheerleading! It shows mysteries of what is going to happen next. I loved this book!
14. Any reasons not to read the book? No the book was interesting and fun!
15. Did you like this book or not? And why…? I loved this book because it talked about friendship and activities I am interested in like cheerleading. The cover page in the inside shows some cheerleading moves. I recommend this book to people who like cheerleading and solving mysteries of happiness and friendship.
