3. Complete Book Title: The Chocolate Touch

4. Author of Book: Patrick Skene Catling

5. Year the book was published: 1979

6. Genre: Fantasy

7. Student rating of book (1 the highest, 5 the lowest): 2

8. Main conflict in the book:
The main conflict in the book started when John started realizing that his wish, as good as it may be, was becoming a nightmare. As he touched different objects they all turned to chocolate!

9. Setting of the book: (Place and Setting)
The setting of the book took place in John’s house, at his school, and in the candy shop. The time this took place is unknown.

10. Main Characters and the part they played in the book:
(1) John Midas, the young boy that is finally granted his chocolate dream.
(2) The Storekeeper, the man who grants John his wish and teaches the young boy a lesson that would change him.

11. Are the characters believable and interesting?
The characters in this book are mostly believable and defiantly sparked my interest. They are in a way not believable because the shopkeeper disappears and then reappears in Johns own mind. But otherwise the characters are 100% believable.

12. One excellent direct quotation from the book; (include who said it, page number, and quotation marks!)
“Well John,” the storekeeper said, “if you had to choose between getting rid of your chocolate touch and restoring your mother to life, which would it be?” This quote was said by the storekeeper on page 118.

13. Good reasons to read the book:
This book would be great to read because it is an interesting story that sparks your imagination and shows you that there can be to much of something no matter how much you like it! The book is fantastic for those who love chocolate and can’t have enough sweet candy to shove into their mouth. It also has a fun plot that keeps a reader hooked! Last, the writer of this book has a big imagination and likes to think out of the box, which makes this tale a little more fun than other books that I have read.

14. Any reasons not to read the book?
The only reasons that I can think of to not read this book, are that it is a little too easy to read and I think it should be for maybe a 5th grader or even a 4th grader to read and not a 6th grader. Also, that this book wouldn’t be interesting to those who like sadness, romance, suspense, and terror, since this book is more fun and cartoon like. Last, this book is unrealistic, so sometimes that will loose some people’s interest and make them want to see something more real and have more life to it rather than just about food and a boy.

15. Did you like this book or not? And why…
I enjoyed reading this book, because I love how the author made a fun story with a lesson tied in with it. I also enjoyed this book because of its unrealistic ways that stretched my imagination. I liked how the book related to me and how I love to eat chocolate as a snack every now and then. Another thing I liked about this book was that it gave me a few giggles here and there and kept me interested in the main idea. Overall this book was fun to read and worth my while.
