Leaving Their Mark In History

Hands in the Cement In an unprecedented mass student activity anywhere, the 976-member student body at La Canada High School last Firday took part in writing their names in wet cement, a la the Hollywood stars. The memorable event, an idea of principal Elwin Clemmer, took less than two hours as the supervised Spartans were sent to the area in shifts which they started at 9:15 a.m. Nails were used as writing equipment. Scene of the cement writing was a walkway between the library and gymnasium with two strips (totaling 300 square feet) on each side of the new pavement being reserved for the names of the school's charter students. Some 50 students were absent that day but they had their names inscribed in the cement by members of the faculty. In both writing areas, the following inscription was made: "LCHS, Charter Spartans, Dec. 1963." Pictured above, one group of students are busy making history with a nail in their writing hand as other Spartans wait their turn behind them.
