(For Windows 95/98)

La Cañada High School Digital Portfolio

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is the computer language used to create web pages for use on the Internet. Many common programs can create files in HTML format: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Photo Editor, and many others. These programs allow you to save your documents in HTML format to build your digital portfolio.

  1. Saving Microsoft Word Files as HTML

Microsoft Word can be used to create a standard word-processing document, such as an essay, written report, or typed homework. Word may also be used to prepare some of the other entries in the portfolio, such as Education, Showcase, Extracurricular Activities, and References.

In the following exercise, we will save a Word document as an HTML file for use on your portfolio web page.

    1. Create or open the file to be included in the digital portfolio using Word. An example of this could be a pre-saved English essay.
    2. Note: If the file has already been created at home or on a different computer, and you have it on a disk, insert the disk and go to File – Open, and navigate to the floppy drive where the file is stored and double-click on it.

The file that you want to save as HTML should be on the screen.

    3. Go to File and select Save As HTML.
    4. In the File Name box, type a short name for the file.
    5. Example: Give a file a name of essay (the extension .html is added automatically).

    6. In the Save In box, navigate to your folder on the server entitled www.
    7. Click on Save and your file is saved as an HTML file!
    8. You may link to this file from your portfolio template using Netscape Composer and editing your index.html file.
  1. Saving Microsoft Excel Files as HTML

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program used to create projects, charts, graphs, etc… It can also be used as a program to add tables to your digital portfolio.

Excel comes with a Save as HTML command that converts a worksheet to an HTML table that can be published in your portfolio. In the following exercise, we will save/convert a worksheet as an HTML file for use on your portfolio web page.

    1. Create or open the file using Excel.
    2. Note: If you created the file at home or on a different computer, and have it on a disk, insert the disk and go to File – Open and navigate to the floppy drive where the file is stored and double-click on it.

  1. Saving Images on a Digital Portfolio

You will use an image editor (such as Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Photo Editor, Paint, etc…) to scan, edit, and publish photos and images to your digital portfolio. These photos and images, among others, may include a photo of yourself, sample of your work, and a copy of your transcript. This section will guide you in saving your photo/image as a JPEG file for use on your web page. JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Expert Group and is designed for photographic quality images. Note: HTML is only text and doesn’t contain images, although it allows you to include them in a document. In this section, we are only working with the JPEG file format.

In the following exercise, we will save an image as a JPEG file for use on your portfolio web page. This is a general procedure for use on any image editor.

    1. Acquire the image. Some of the sources for the image may be a scanner, digital camera, or a previously saved file. To open a previously saved file, go to File and choose Open. Navigate to the name of the file and double-click on it.
    2. Do any editing that may need to be done to the image now, such as changing light, color, and other settings. When finished, go on to the next step.
    3. We will now convert the image to a JPEG. Go to File and choose Save As. Under File Name, type a short name for the file. Also, under Save in, navigate to your www folder on the server. Under Save as, scroll down to JPEG (*.JPG, *.JPE). Click on Save.
    4. In the JPEG Options dialog box, accept the default and just click OK.
    5. The image is now a JPEG in your www folder and is ready to be imported from Netscape Composer.
    6. To import the image from Netscape Composer, follow these steps:
      1. In Composer, move the cursor to the location on the page where you want to insert the image.
      2. Go to Insert and select Image. The Image Properties dialogue box opens.
      3. Click on Choose File and navigate to the location of the image in your www folder. Double-click on it.

  1. Saving Microsoft PowerPoint Files as HTML

Microsoft PowerPoint is a program that is included as part of Microsoft Office and is used to create overheads and visual text/multimedia presentations. Some students may want to include a PowerPoint presentation in their digital portfolio. However, due to the large size of PowerPoint files, students should think carefully about the number of PowerPoint slides they put into their portfolio. PowerPoint comes with a Save As Wizard that converts your file into HTML format so it can be published in your digital portfolio.

In the following exercise, we will save a PowerPoint presentation as an HTML file for viewing on your portfolio web page.

    1. Have the file that contains the slides that you want to publish open in PowerPoint.
    2. Note: Remember that PowerPoint presentations take up an enormous amount of memory. You may want to copy just the slides that you would like to publish into a new file and run the following steps from that new file.

Note: If the file has already been created at home or on a different computer, and you have it on a disk, insert the disk and go to File – Open, and navigate to the floppy drive where the file is stored and double-click on it.

    3. Go to File and select Save as HTML. The Save as HTML wizard opens. Click Next.
    4. Under Choose existing layout or create a new one, select New layout and click Next.
    5. Under Select page style, choose the page style that you would like and click Next.
    6. Under Choose Graphic Type, select JPEG or GIF (doesn't matter) with compression value 100% and click Next.
    7. Under Create graphics sized for monitor resolution of, select 640 x 480. Under Width of graphics, select ½ width of screen. Click Next.
    8. Under Define information page options, insert the requested information if you wish. This information will be displayed on a separate information page at the beginning of your presentation. Click Next.
    9. Under Select colors and button look, you may use your own Custom Colors, or use the Browser colors (recommended). These choices will change the color in the background of your presentation. Click Next.
    10. Under Select button style, select the button style that you wish and click Next.
    11. Under Place navigation buttons, select the place on the page where you would like the navigation buttons to be. Click Next.
    12. Under Create HTML folder in, click on Browse and navigate to the location of your www folder and double click on it (until your www folder appears in the Look in box). Click on Select, then click Next. Then click on Finish.
    13. In the prompt that comes up, click on Don’t Save.
    14. The computer is now creating the HTML files in a new subfolder within the www folder.
    15. When finished, in your index.html file within Netscape Composer, add a hyperlink to the presentation by browsing to the new folder that contains the presentation under the www folder and selecting the file by the name of index (PowerPoint created this file automatically as the "starting point" for your presentation). A hyperlink to the index file should have been created in your index.html file. For more detailed information, please refer to the instructions on using the digital portfolio template.
