Patty Compeau and Mary Lou Langedyke applied for and received a La Canada Unified School District Mentor Grant to develop a 9th grade presentation portfolio and to pilot a 10th 12th grade presentation portfolio.
30 high school portfolio coaches were trained as part of an institute under the Institutes for the 21st Century. Student coaches presented the portfolio contents and evaluated student portfolios.
The English Department hosted the 9th grade portfolio project and the Social Science Department hosted the 10th 12th grade pilot project.

Summer 1998
Ten students and ten teachers attended summer planning workshops and create a template and directions for the digital portfolio.
The decision was made to use html format for the digital portfolio.
Three students wrote digital portfolio directions for PC and Macintosh.
The digital portfolio directions were available to teachers and students by accessing the LCHS web page.

The Verdugo School to Career Coalition funded the portfolio mentors stipend.
The portfolio project shifted from the English classes to a twenty-minute homeroom.

12th, 11th and 8th grade students are given an opportunity to use their portfolios in showcase interviews
Over 150 portfolio coaches were organized into four groups leadership, 7-8, 9-12 and digital. Each group develops a set of skills necessary for each grade level.
9 12 coaches began the process of presenting lessons to homeroom classes on school to career topics.
