La Cañada Unified School District has an opening in school year 2022-23 for a full-time school counselor at the elementary level. The elementary counselor provides counseling for individual students, runs social skills groups, presents social/emotional lessons to classes in gr K-6, coordinates the site Student Study Team (SST) and Section 504 meetings, and oversees the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) and state testing programs. A probationary contract will be offered, leading to tenure.

Salary Range:
Placement on the counselor salary schedule is dependent on education and years of employment in a public school district. No cap on years for public school experience. The starting annual salary range for a full-time school counselor is $58,152 to $117,886, which corresponds to a monthly salary of $4,845.97 to $9,823.83. Counselors are paid over 12 months, July through June.

Benefits:
This position is eligible to participate in the District’s medical benefit plans. Currently the District’s maximum contribution to an employee’s benefits package is $15,930 per year. Premiums for a part-time employee are prorated based on the employee’s full-time equivalent (FTE) percentage.

Signing Bonus:
If a newly hired teacher signs a contract with the District before May 31, the District will offer a signing bonus as follows: $3,000 on the first day of paid service based on the 2022-23 work calendar; $1,000 on the first day of paid service based on the 2023-24 work calendar; and $2,000 on the first day of paid service based on the 2024-25 work calendar and permanent status has been granted. If a new employee leaves the District prior to being granted permanent status, the remainder of the installments will be forfeited and not paid to the individual.

If a newly hired teacher signs a contract with the District on or after May 31, but no later than July 1, 2022, the District will offer a signing bonus as follows: $1,500 on the first day of paid service based on the 2022-23 work calendar; $1,000 on the first day of paid service based on the 2023-24 work calendar; and $2,000 on the first day of paid service based on the 2024-25 work calendar and permanent status has been granted. If a new employee leaves the District prior to being granted permanent status, the remainder of the installments will be forfeited and not paid to the individual.

Qualifications:
1. Credential: Valid California Pupil Personnel Services credential authorizing school counseling.
2. Education: Master’s degree; possession of a Master’s Degree of Social Work or License in Clinical Social Work is desirable; Marriage and Family Therapist License is highly preferred.
3. Experience: Preferred: Two years or more successful elementary school counseling and administrative services certificate of eligibility or credential. Successful classroom teaching experience at the elementary school level is also desirable.

Work Year:
This is a full-time position (1.0 FTE, or 100%), August through mid-June, 196 contracted workdays. The first day of paid service is Friday, July 29, 2022. A new staff member orientation day has been scheduled for Wednesday, August 10, 2022. The first day with students will be Monday, August 15, 2022, and the last day of the counselor’s work year is Wednesday, June 7, 2023.
