Update for 2020-2021
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, there are several notable changes to the GATE qualification process:
1) All 2020-2021 4th grade students who were unable to take the OLSAT in Spring 2020 due to school closures will be administered the OLSAT test as soon as it is safe and allowable. Qualification letters for all 2020-2021 4th grade students were delayed to allow for the completion of testing. Qualification letters have now been sent to families.
2) Students may only qualify for GATE through passing the OLSAT at 98% or above. Because there was no 2020 CAASPP test, there will be no alternative criteria to be used as in past years (see below for definition).
Traditional LCUSD GATE Qualification Process
There are two ways students may qualify for GATE: either through passing the OLSAT at 98% or above or through the alternative criteria, using standardized assessment (CAASPP), district writing assessment scores and a minimum of 80% or above on OLSAT. Instead of sending letters to families twice, once after OLSAT testing and again after CAASPP scores are available, it was decided by the GATE Advisory Committee to wait until CAASPP scores were available to inform families of their child’s qualification. Letters will be sent out prior to the start of school.
The following explains a bit about this process:
All 2019-2020 4th grade students who took the OLSAT in March 2019 and scored a 98 or 99 on their “total age percentile rank” will automatically qualify for GATE services and receive a qualification letter.
All 2019-2020 4-6 grade students who meet the district’s alternative criteria based on their OLSAT, CAASPP Math and Language Arts scores in combination with their end of the year district writing assessment will also qualify for GATE services and receive a qualification letter.
All 2019-2020 4th grade students who do not qualify for GATE based on their OLSAT scores or alternative criteria scores will receive a letter of non-qualification.
