Permit Facts

What you should know about permits:
  • A permit application is not a guarantee of enrollment.
  • The permit process happens once a year beginning in March for the upcoming school year. All required supporting documents need to be submitted with the permit at the time of submission. We do not accept late or incomplete permits.
  • All permits will be put into a lottery to be ranked in accordance with priorities established in the District Policies and Administrative Regulations.
  • An email regarding your student’s ranking will be sent to you in early June. This is a ranking only and not a guarantee of enrollment. We cannot predict, based on the ranking, how many students we will accept. All residents of LCUSD get priority for placement.
  • Students are placed based on space availability at each grade level.
  • We do not create additional classrooms based on permits, only residents.
  • We will notify you of the status of your application as soon as possible.
  • You could be notified as late as early August of your acceptance.
  • We do not place permit students throughout the school year. Once school begins, we are done placing permit students until the next year.
  • Once a student has been accepted to our district, you will not need to go through the permit application process again. Instead, you will receive an annual re-verification form at the end of April, that needs to be filled out, appropriate documentation attached and returned to our District Offices.

Priority approval categories are as follows:

  3. The student's parent/guardian is employed by LCUSD for at least 10 hours per week.
  4. The student resides within the "Sagebrush" area of the city of La Canada ("Sagebrush Permits").
  5. The student's grandparents have resided within the boundaries of the District for at least 8 consecutive years ("Legacy Permits").
  6. The student's parent/guardian is physically employed within District boundaries for at least 32 hours per week (non-LCUSD employee).
  7. The student's parent/guardian is physically employed within District boundaries for at least 16 hours per week (non-LCUSD employee).
